| INTIMACY/PARTNERSHIP |
Happiness is the degree to which our ideal version of life matches our actual life. How many of us are truly satisfied in our relationships? And if we're not, do we possess the skills to increase the possibility of pleasure with the ones we love?
How willing are you to take an objective look at your own behavior and begin to assume responsibility for what does or doesn't work in your personal relationships? It is challenging to find intimacy in our relationships when we must divide ourselves between self care, child care, elder care and satisfying our own desire to feel fulfilled in our partnerships. Each person in a family is dealing with different environments, social groups and perceived demands requiring different modes of conduct not to mention different schedules. Often, survival in our present day culture saps us of the energy to deal gracefully with important relationship issues that really are the fundamental basis for quality of life. We can be so caught up with success and the pursuit of success, that the greatest success of all can elude us. The ability to meet one’s own needs while meeting the needs of others requires more than cursory acquaintance with individual differences. Deep understanding and respect for the complexities which comprise a human being’s thoughts and behavior, are abilities which must be cultivated and learned-- just as any skill must be mastered. Anyone who has ever attempted a romance, a friendship, a partnership or a parenting role quickly experiences the necessity of being able to read and interpret mood and feeling states as well as verbal and non verbal behavior. Human beings are infinitely complex and unless we make an effort to be conscious of our own and others motivations, our automatic assumptions and presumptions can lead us into troubled waters. Meetings with a psychotherapist in a coaching capacity can help provide the objectivity necessary for maintaining clear boundaries, sensitive communications and ultimately healthy relationships.
